Montanas

This family of clematis are a familiar sight in late Spring, covering walls, fences and buildings with thousands of flowers. They are easy to grow and are generally thought of as hardy, although in recent years the mild winters followed by a severe spring frost has caused considerable damage not just to young montanas but also to ancient and well established plants. Wrapping the stems (trunks) in fleece would help to protect them somewhat, though covering a 30 ft. montana to protect the flower buds is perhaps a little excessive. They are, in the main, extremely large plants and therefore not suitable for container culture. I know it's been done, but we don't recommend it. Equally, expecting a potentially large plant to act in a refined manner over a small arch is not a realistic attitude. They can be pruned to control them after flowering, leaving all summer to produce the growth on which they will flower the following year. Don't leave the plant until it has become a monster preventing entrance to your home, but start as you mean to go on. Don't cut into very old wood as this is a potential entry for disease but trim the whippy stuff back to a framework. Certain varieties will tolerate any aspect, shade and wind included but most cultivars flower best in sun. Flower diameter is 2 - 4 inches across depending on variety.Temp. Zones 5 - 9 if frosts not hard or prolonged, otherwise 6 - 9.
